AMD reports net loss of $590 million for Q1 2012, calls that 'solid results'
We're not sure about you, but we wouldn't call losing over half a billion dollars "solid results." Still, we're not 100 percent ready to rain on AMD's parade yet. The non-GAAP results (which disregard a pile of one-time charges and investments) turn the $590 million loss into a $92 million profit. Still, the GAAP results do make two straight quarters of losses and revenue clearly continued to decline, falling to $1.59 billion. That's down six percent from last quarter and two percent from the same time period last year. Revenue from the graphics division held steady from last quarter, though, it's down seven percent year-over-year. For more financial fun hit up the PR after the break.

Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector
The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street) is the brightest pico projector we?ve tested, with a good range of connections including HDMI. It stacks up well against other pico projectors in connectivity, and has decent image quality but for one notable issue we encountered in testing. It?s worth a good look if you?re looking for a powerful pocket projector.
The PK320 is rated at 100 lumens, and has a native WVGA (854 by 480 pixel) widescreen resolution. The projector is quite compact, measuring 1.2 by 4.7 by 2.7 inches. Using our postage scale, I weighted the projector at 0.5 pounds, while adding the power adapter brought the total weight up to just under a pound. The projector also can run off an included, removable lithium-ion cell that can last 90+ minutes in eco mode and 50+ minutes in standard mode, according to Optoma. It can fit in my pants pocket easily enough, though it takes up much of the room.
This copper-brown projector has the look of a larger projector, with the lens near the edge of one of the long sides, as opposed to the ?light saber? appearance of many picos in which the beam emerges from the middle of the narrow end. The focus wheel is in front of the lens, and is tricky to use, even if you can avoid putting a finger into the light path. On one side is the tiny power button; in back are the ports, a good selection for a pico projector: a proprietary port to fit a VGA cable; mini-HDMI; micro-USB for file transfer; AV-in, which fits an included cable with 3 RCA plugs for composite video, and an audio-out jack for headphones.
On top of the projector is a 7-button control panel, backlit with blue LEDs (though you have to quickly make a selection as the buttons soon go dark). The projector includes a tiny remote the same 7 buttons, plus buttons for Off, Bright, and for accessing VGA, HGMI, and Video sources. Working the menus can be awkward, especially at first. The controls (both on the remote and on the projector itself) make use of the arrow keys, but more often as symbol keys to access specific functions than to navigate menus. For instance, the Home screen shows six choices, each identified by a symbol: the right arrow denotes Setup, the up arrow, Music, etc.?they?re useless as arrow keys here in that you can?t scroll anywhere, but they do take you to the functions they symbolize. This takes some getting used to.
You can run presentations computer free from the projector?s 2GB of internal memory, or off of a microSD card. In addition to showing video, you can play music, show photos, or display business documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF) from internal memory, memory card, or thumb drive.
I tested the PK320 from about 8 feet away from our test screen, where it threw a test image about 48 inches diagonally. Image quality suffered in modest ambient light, so it?s best used in a relatively small, dark room.
Image Quality
In testing using the DisplayMate ?suite, I found the PK320?s data image quality suitable for internal presentations, say to a small workgroup?provided that the room is dark and relatively small. You could use it for presenting to potential clients in a pinch, though you might not want to use it in presentations where sharp text or exacting color is paramount. The good news is that (with the exception of an issue that I?ll soon discuss) colors were bright and reasonably true, especially yellows, which often look dull or mustardy with DLP projectors. The projector also showed less of a rainbow effect? distracting red-green-blue rainbow glints, particularly in bright areas against a dark background?than most DLP projectors.
In our text testing, images showed some blur at the two smallest sizes in both black-on-white and white-on-black text, a bit more fuzzy than is typical of a data projector. The other notable issue involved tinting in images with white or gray backgrounds.
When I set up our test unit and turned it on, I immediately noticed a pink tint in the (rather busy) image?s upper left corner. It persisted even after I?d given the projector enough time to fully warm up. In DisplayMate testing, when viewing an image that should have been uniformly white, the tinting revealed itself more fully as pinkish on the image?s left side, and greenish towards the bottom center.
The issue was notable enough that I requested a second test unit from our Optoma rep. I noticed the same issue in the second projector, though it wasn?t as severe: Only a trace of the pink showed up (in the same location), but the green was still apparent, at nearly the same intensity as with the original test unit. It showed up against white to medium gray backgrounds in data images, and with Word and Excel documents. It?s hard to say how pervasive or severe the problem is among PK320s in general based on two test units, but it?s definitely an issue worth looking out for. Optoma says that it is looking into the issue, with an eye towards correcting any irregularities they encounter.
Video Quality
I tested video quality using multiple video sources over several connections, primarily HDMI. The Optoma ML300 is okay for short clips, provided that color fidelity isn?t critical. For the most part, colors were bright and well saturated, but some tinting was apparent at times. Flesh tones tended to look reddish, and some bright areas took on a greenish tinge. Also, there was some loss of detail in bright areas. One plus is that, as was the case in data images, rainbow artifacts were nearly nonexistent and shouldn?t be an issue except maybe for people particularly sensitive to the effect.
Other Issues
The audio from the PK320?s built-in 2-watt speaker is of modest volume, not bad for a pico projector but you?ll want to be close to the projector whether you?re watching a movie or playing music. Fortunately the unit has an audio-out jack for headphones or powered external speakers.
The LED light source will last an estimated 20,000 hours, so you should never have to replace bulbs. The projector is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.
The market for micro-projectors has changed in the past year, with the influx of small LED-based projectors, palmtop sized or a little larger, in the 200 to 500 lumen range. Though there were always a few palmtop projectors, there?s now more of a continuum in side and brightness between pico projectors and ultra-portable business projectors.
The PK320 is among the largest and most powerful pico projectors, and its price is just slightly lower than the new micro-projectors (which cluster in the $500 to $600 range). The PK320 is smaller and lighter than these models, which weigh between 2 and 3 pounds. One drawback, though, is that it has an external AC adapter?which, unlike the projector, isn?t pocketable?while the LED micro-projectors have internal power supplies. The micro-projectors offer higher resolution, generally WXGA (1,280 by 800), and they?re considerably brighter than picos? though we haven?t been impressed with TI?s latest generation of DLP chips that many of them use, as they tend to introduce apparent scaling artifacts in data images that may result in softer focus.
If you?re considering the Optoma Pico PK320, you may want to look at some of these slightly larger and brighter micro-projectors such as the Optoma ML500 ?($650 street, 3.5 stars), Acer K330 ($600 street, 3.5 stars), and the more entertainment-oriented BenQ Joybee GP2 ($599 direct, 4 stars) as well. As for picos, the Editors? Choice Optoma Pico PK301 offers much of what the PK320 brings to the table at a lower price, though it lacks an HDMI connection and is only rated at 50 lumens. The Favi B1-LED-Pico ($280 street, 3.5 stars) is also a respectable choice, though it lacks a battery and so must remain yoked to a wall wart.
The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector is a powerhouse as a pico projector, bright and with a wealth of connectivity choices. However, it?s less impressive for its price now that bright micro-projectors are available for a little more money, and it still has a few image quality kinks to work out.

As we eagerly await the arrival of the 808 PureView, video professionals are pondering the usefulness of that 41-megapixel sensor. On paper, it's capable of shooting continuously-focusing 34-megapixel video that's then resampled down when compressed, but blogger James Burland wonders what it could do with less resampling. He claims that a member of Nokia's imaging team told him that shooting at 4K "might be possible," although there are plenty of issues that prevent it being achieved on the 808 handset itself.The hardware wouldn't be able to handle the storage or processing requirements, so it's unlikely Peter Jackson will be shooting on a Symbian-powered device any time soon -- but in any case it's an interesting pointer to the future of cellphone cinematography.

Stocks rally on optimism about Europe

Optimism about Europe drove stocks sharply higher Thursday.
Lower Italian bond yields eased some euro-zone concerns and rumors about China's strong GDP growth bolstered investors' appetite for risk.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed the day up 181 points.
The S&P 500 popped above its 50-day moving average in a sign that traders may see the recent pullback of nearly 5 percent as an opportunity to catch up with the benchmark's performance. The index is up more than 10 percent for the year to date.
In a sign that the U.S. labor market's recovery may be stalling, government data showed new U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly last week to their highest level since January. But some economists cited the Easter holidays for the spike in claims, adding that they expected applications will keep declining in the weeks ahead.
Benchmark bond yields in Italy and Spain dropped following solid demand at this week's Italian debt auctions, while the euro hit a one-week high against the U.S. dollar, indicating a reduction in near-term concern about the euro zone's debt troubles.
"The easing bond yields are a signal to investors here that things aren't quite that bad in Europe," said Brian Gendreau, market strategist with Cetera Financial Group.
Early into earnings season, results are beating Wall Street's expectations at a fast clip. Analysts say the expectations could have been lowered too much and stocks can seem cheap after the S&P's recent pullback of almost 5 percent.
"What early reports we have already show a pretty good beat rate," said Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis. "I wonder if we're going to beat the low hurdle of earnings."
Market participants also cited expectations that China's gross domestic product data, due tonight, would surprise on the upside as a reason for gains in basic materials shares. But some were skeptical of this rumor.
The U.S. Federal Reserve is running through data to determine if last month's soft non-farm payrolls report was a weather-related setback or a sign the recovery is losing momentum, said William Dudley, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Dudley left the door open to additional stimulus measures if the economic recovery gets off track. Previous rounds of quantitative easing have provided a boost for equities and other risk assets.

DETROIT (AP) ? Last week, the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to win against Mariano Rivera.
On Wednesday, they beat Justin Verlander ? after the Detroit ace had looked untouchable for most of the afternoon.
"They are never going to give up," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Say what you want about this team, but they play nine hard innings."
Ben Zobrist hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the top of the ninth Wednesday, and Tampa Bay scored four runs in its final at-bat to beat Verlander and the Tigers 4-2. Verlander took a one-hitter into the ninth and hadn't allowed a run all season before the Rays broke through.
Verlander allowed a run on a wild pitch, then Evan Longoria tied the game at 2 with a single to left on Verlander's 104th and final pitch.
The Tigers (4-1) lost for the first time this season.
"Once a couple guys got on, really the first time I've cranked it up like that ? and lost a little bit of my consistency that I'd had all day," Verlander said. "It's inexcusable. This loss rests solely on my shoulders today."
Daniel Schlereth came on and allowed a walk to load the bases, and Zobrist singled up the middle off Jose Valverde.
James Shields (1-0) allowed six hits and two runs in eight innings. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his third save.
"We know now what kind of team we have," Shields said. "We don't fear anyone, because if we keep fighting, we'll win more than our share."
For most of the day, Verlander was marvelous. He took a no-hitter into the fifth and had thrown just 81 pitches through eight.
But pinch-hitter Jeff Keppinger started the ninth with a single, and Desmond Jennings added another one an out later.
"When you go against Verlander, if you get the ball in between the giant white lines, you've accomplished something. You know he's going to beat you most of the time, but you just hope he makes a mistake and you can take advantage," Jennings said. "Kepp gave us a lot of confidence. We hadn't been doing anything before that, but he got a hit and we got things going from there."
Carlos Pena drew a walk ? with ball four skipping past catcher Alex Avila for a wild pitch that made it 2-1.
Verlander's final pitch to Longoria was clocked at 100 mph, but the star third baseman was able to hit a sharp single through the left side of the infield, and neither Detroit reliever was able to stop the rally until it was too late.
"I got away from what I'd been doing all day," Verlander said. "I'd been playing to those guys' aggressiveness, getting them out in front on off-speed stuff and then just got away from it there in the ninth for no reason."
Verlander allowed four runs and four hits in 8 1-3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Verlander, last year's AL Cy Young and MVP winner, pitched eight scoreless innings against Boston last week. He didn't get the win that day either ? Valverde squandered the lead, although the Tigers did win that game.
Wednesday was Verlander's first regular-season loss since July 15.
"Kepp was the whole key to the inning. If Verlander gets him out, the game's over," Maddon said. "He shuts the door on you in that situation, but getting a hit there made the whole difference. I think, after that, Verlander started to tune up the velocity and he lost a bit of command in the process."
Shields, who finished third in last year's Cy Young voting, allowed an RBI single in the first to Miguel Cabrera. He also balked in a run in the fifth.
Shields bounced back from a shaky first start, when he allowed six runs and nine hits in five innings against the New York Yankees.
The Rays are 4-1 for the first time in franchise history. They beat Rivera in their season opener, part of a three-game sweep of the Yankees. The Tigers were trying to start 5-0 for the first time since 2006, when they won the American League pennant.

China leadership succession back to old disorderly self
HONG KONG (Reuters) - A rising star is ejected from China's Politburo and faces trial for violations of Communist Party discipline. His wife is in custody, suspected of murdering a British national.
So much for an orderly transition of power.
Just weeks ago, the pending retirement of Chinese president and Communist Party Chief Hu Jintao to the younger generation headed by anointed leader to be Xi Jinping had appeared headed for a quiet repeat of 2002.
That year, Hu took the reins from Jiang Zemin in what was hailed as the first peaceful transition of power in the Chinese Communist Party's history. The party itself believed it had finally come up with a model for orderly and structured leadership handovers.
No longer. The 2002 transition increasingly looks to be the exception.
The ouster of charismatic but controversial former Chongqing party boss Bo Xilai, and the detention of his wife Gu Kailai in connection with the murder of Briton Neil Heywood, conjures images more akin to the sinister and sometimes deadly power politics under Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping than to peaceful succession.
Between the two of them, Mao and Deng abandoned five chosen successors who were shoved aside or died in prison, under house arrest or in strange circumstances. Many other senior leaders around them were purged.
Mao ousted his first successor, Liu Shaoqi, during the Cultural Revolution in 1969 and Liu later died in prison. Mao's second, Lin Biao, died in a mysterious plane crash in 1971. He was tried posthumously for treason after what China said was an abortive coup attempt.
According to Party legend, Mao told his third chosen successor, Hua Guofeng, on his deathbed in 1976: "With you in charge, my heart is at ease". Hua lasted only a year.
He was deposed in 1977 by Deng, who had been purged twice by Mao before coming back to assume power.
ENDANGERED SPECIES
The revolving door of Communist Party chiefs resumed under Deng, who sacked his own first successor, the reformer Hu Yaobang, in 1987 for being too soft on Western ideas.
Hu Yaobang's death in April 1989 sparked spontaneous memorials in Tiananmen Square that turned into the student-led democracy protests that were the undoing of Deng's second successor, Zhao Ziyang. Zhao was removed in May 1989 for sympathising with the student protests that were crushed with deadly force later by the People's Liberation Army.
A political joke that circulated around Beijing in late 1989 put Deng in a car with two other senior leaders when a cow blocked the road. One leader warned they would declare martial law. The cow didn't budge. The other said they'd send in the army. The stubborn bovine stood fast.
It was only when Deng whispered in its ear that he would appoint it as Communist Party chief that the cow fled in fright.
Deng's last pick, Jiang Zemin, defied the odds. With remarkable staying power, he ousted his own rivals and served as party chief over the next decade until handing over to Hu Jintao in 2002 to mark the first peaceful transition.
Bo Xilai was not a candidate for one of China's top two posts. But the former commerce minister was actively campaigning for one of nine seats on the next Politburo Standing Committee, the elite body that will run China under Hu's anointed successor Xi Jinping after a Party Congress late this year.
The bizarre drama surrounding Bo's removal, triggered when his own police chief, Wang Lijun, fled into the U.S. consulate in Chengdu apparently seeking asylum, hearkens back to power politics of old.
While the Party maintains a veil of secrecy and decides its top personnel moves - including Bo's fate - behind closed doors, his purge has sparked tensions with some conservative leftists and other supporters and upset with the disruption of what once appeared to be another routine transition.
In a sign of how fraught the leadership transition has become, the party mouthpiece, the People's Daily, issued a call for unity alongside Tuesday's reports of Bo's removal from the Politburo and broader Party Central Committee.
"We must conscientiously unify our thinking around the spirit of the central leadership, and closely unite around the party's central leadership with Comrade Hu Jintao as general secretary," it said.
If the tensions sparked by Bo's downfall are any sign, holding Party unity will prove a challenge.

Musician Herbie Hancock has book deal for a memoir
NEW YORK (AP) ? After decades of making history, Herbie Hancock is ready to tell it.
The award-winning, groundbreaking jazz performer and composer has a deal with Viking for a memoir expected in 2014.
"Quincy Jones is a dear friend of mine and he keeps saying to me, 'You've got to do a book,'" Hancock said Tuesday during a telephone interview from Shanghai, where he is currently on tour.
"I've had a life that has taken many interesting paths. I've learned a lot from mentors who were instrumental in shaping me and I want to share what I've learned."
Hancock, who turns 72 this week, has won 14 Grammys and for decades has been mixing jazz with blues, soul, funk and electronic music. He won an Academy Award in 1986 for the score to "'Round Midnight."
He is known for his pioneering work with Miles Davis, for such standards as "Cantaloupe Island" and "Chameleon" and for the hit instrumental "Rockit," the video of which helped make him the rare jazz performer to catch on with MTV fans. Hancock is currently a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO.
He has not only played with such jazz greats as Davis, Coleman Hawkins and Donald Byrd, but with such pop performers as Joni Mitchell, Sting and Stevie Wonder. His 2010 album, "The Imagine Project," includes contributions from Seal, John Legend and Dave Matthews.
"I am hoping this book will not only appeal to jazz fans," he said.
He will work on the book with a collaborator, still to be determined. Financial terms were not disclosed for the memoir, which interested several publishers, but was landed by Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). Hancock was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose clients range from President Obama to Barbra Streisand.
The book will be, in part, a spiritual journey. Hancock will tell of being a Buddhist and how he does not see himself primarily as a musician, even though he has been playing piano since age 7.
"Being a musician is not what I am, it's what I do," he explained. "To my wife, I'm not Herbie Hancock the musician. I'm her husband. When I'm talking to a neighbor, I'm a neighbor. When I vote, I'm a citizen."
He also promises plenty of stories about music, including one about touring with Davis in the 1960s. They were playing in Europe and were having an especially good night, the audience rapt.

Apr 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's national carrier, SriLankan Airlines announced that flights to Rome, Milan and Moscow will continue uninterrupted according to the current schedule.
The flight frequencies to these three destinations will also remain unchanged, the airline said.
Earlier, the airline, in its move to cut costs, announced the flights to Rome, Milan and Zurich would be suspended temporarily during the off peak times from May to June.
However, the Sri Lankan President on a request made by the Colombo Cardinal Rev. Malcom Ranjith has directed the CEO of SriLankan, Kapila Chandrasena to continue the flights without interruptions.

Article 36 of the constitution states that in the event that the president cannot carry out his term, the head of the national assembly becomes interim leader until new elections are held.
Only the constitutional court can determine if Article 36 can be applied, and Ivory Coast's Minister of African Integration Adama Bictogo confirmed on Monday that the legal body was meeting to render its decision.
The matter became much more straightforward over the weekend when Toure handed in his resignation, inviting reporters to witness the act from one of the hiding places in the capital where he has been holed up since the military takeover. Toure was only months from stepping down when the renegade soldiers stormed the seat of government, and he said that he was handing in his resignation of his own accord, and out of love for the nation.
Once the court confirms the vacancy of power, the head of the national assembly will be sworn in as interim president. He will lead the country during a transitional period until new elections can be held.
It's not yet clear what role the military junta will play in the transition. Soldiers at the military base that has served as the de facto seat of government after the coup said privately that they were not happy with their leader's decision to bow to pressure and hand back power to civilians.
And throughout the city, soldiers still control strategic points, including a checkpoint at the airport and several checkpoints outside the state television station. The coup began when the soldiers grabbed control of the state broadcaster, using it to disseminate their message.
Another complicating factor is that the head of the national assembly, Dioncounda Traore, who is now supposed to become interim leader, is considered a divisive figure. It's unclear if he has the backing to hold the country together during a tough transition, leading to new elections.
The soldiers who grabbed power claimed they did so because of President Toure's mishandling of a rebellion in the north, which began in January. Toure's popularity took a nosedive because of his lack of assertiveness in the face of the mounting attacks, which inflicted large casualties on Mali's ill-equipped army.
After Toure was forced from power, the Tuareg rebels succeeded in taking the three largest towns in the north. Kidal, Gao and Timbuktu all fell last weekend, and on Friday, the same day that the junta declared they were stepping down, the rebels declared their independence.
The loss of the northern half of the country, an area larger than France, has plunged Mali into crisis. The fighters are divided between a secular group and an Islamist faction that wants to impose Shariah law in Mali's moderate north.
It's unclear which of the factions has the upper hand, though increasingly it appears that Ansar Dine, the Islamist group, has greater sway, including in Timbuktu, where they control the city, whereas the secular group is relegated to the airport.
