A new study confirms solar wind as a source for water embedded in the lunar surface

Three years ago University of Tennessee, Knoxville, researchers helped to discover water on the surface of the moon. Now, they are piecing together the origin of that water: solar wind.

A new study confirms solar wind as a source for water embedded in the lunar surface.

Solar wind is the continuous flow of charged particles from the sun. Scientists have speculated it to be responsible for water on the surface of the moon.

Last year Larry Taylor, distinguished professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, confirmed comets as the source for water inside the moon. This year, Yang Liu, research assistant professor, and Taylor have confirmed solar wind as the source for water on the outsideby depositing positively charged hydrogen atoms, or protons, onto its surface, allowing it to combine with the moon's oxygen to create water.

"When those protons hit the lunar surface with enough force, they break apart oxygen bonds in soil materials to join together and form water," said Liu. "This does not happen on Earth because our atmosphere and magnetic field protect us from being bombarded by these protons, but the moon lacks this protection."

The researchers used lunar samples from three Apollo missions, including one brought back by Neil Armstrong, analyzing something called an agglutinate. An agglutinate, which resembles "dirty Swiss cheese," is a unique product of space weathering in the lunar regolith, the crushed materials on the moon's surface. The agglutinate was chosen because it consisted of products suspected to contain hydrogen. The researchers used infrared spectroscopy to confirm the presence of hydroxyl (OH). Then they used secondary ion mass spectrometry to obtain the amount of hydroxyl and the origins of the hydrogen.

The researchers discovered that most of the water in the agglutinates came from solar wind. Confirming the solar-wind- induced hydroxyl emphasizes the possibility of finding water on the surface of other similar airless bodies.

"This means water likely exists on Mercury and on the asteroids such as Vesta or Eros further within our solar system," said Liu. "These planetary bodies have very different environments, but all have potential to produce water. The finding also implies solar-wind contributes to water ice in lunar poles."

The research also identifies the largest reservoir for water on the lunar surface since regolith, and thus the corresponding hydroxyl is very widespread. This gives the moon the potential to serve as a habitat and gas station in the sky.

"The hydroxyl in such a volumetrically large reservoir is a valuable resource," said Taylor. "With the cost of $25,000 for taking one pint of water to the moon, water has the potential to be used as rocket fuel as liquid hydrogen or oxygen."

Liu and Taylor collaborated with researchers from the California Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan on this study.

UK police arrest journalist in bribery probe

LONDON (AP) ? British police arrested a journalist Saturday on suspicion of bribery, acting on information supplied by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

The 43-year-old man was arrested in London by officers from Operation Elveden, which is investigating inappropriate payments to police and public officials, police said. He was freed on bail several hours later.

The corruption probe is running alongside investigations into phone hacking and computer hacking sparked by revelations that reporters at Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World tabloid routinely intercepted voicemails of those in the public eye.

Police said Saturday's arrest ? the 47th of the investigation ? was the result of information from a News Corp. committee created to get to the bottom of the criminality at Murdoch's British newspapers.

Several people have been charged over the scandal, including former Murdoch executive Rebekah Brooks.

Are our bones well designed? Insects and crabs have a leg up on us

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Researchers from Trinity College Dublin have recently shown that the legs of grasshoppers and crabs have the ideal shape to resist bending and compression. If human leg bones were built the same way, they could be twice as strong.

"Like all Arthropods, grasshoppers and crabs have so called exoskeletons made from a very special material called cuticle," said Professor David Taylor, of the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. "This exoskeleton protects the animal like a knight's suit of armour. Recently we have shown that this cuticle is in fact one of the toughest natural materials."

"In terms of evolution, having your bones on the outside has been a pretty good concept," said his colleague Dr Jan-Henning Dirks. "Since millions of years animals with exoskeletons such as insects, spiders and crustaceans can be found basically in every ecosystem in the world."

So what makes this exoskeleton so successful? Together the interdisciplinary team used the latest principles of engineering mechanics, materials science and biomechanics to address this question. In particular, Taylor and Dirks were interested in the diameter and thickness of the bones. They used a special computer-tomography machine to generate X-ray images of insect legs with a resolution of only a few thousands of a millimetre and collected and compared data from crabs and human bones.

Their results, published in the article 'Shape Optimisation in Exoskeletons and Endoskeletons: a Biomechanics Analysis' in the Journal of the Royal Society, Interface, showed that, whilst human leg bones are relatively thick-walled tubes, the legs of insects and crabs have a much thinner wall in relation to their radius.

"This relation of wall-thickness to radius can tell us a lot about the mechanical stability of the structure," said Taylor. "Imagine the bones as simple tubes. Now, if you had a limited amount of material, what would you do? Would you make a thin solid rod or a hollow, thin walled tube? When compressed, the rod might easily bend like a straw, the hollow tube however might buckle like a beer-can."
However, for a given weight there is a mechanical optimal wall-thickness. And interestingly, the researchers found that the leg-shape of crabs represents an ideal compromise to resist both the bending and compression forces the crab experiences when walking under water.

The locust leg on the other hand is optimised to withstand the huge bending forces which occur when it jumps.
In comparison, the human thighbone didn't do so well. Using the same amount of bone material and taking into account its mechanical properties, the human thighbone could be "redesigned" as an exoskeleton to be twice as strong as it is now.

"Of course there are numerous other factors determining the evolutionary advantages of endo- and exoskeletons," said Taylor. "However, we think that by taking a design engineer's view on the problem we've been able to shed some light on the evolutionary development of skeletal forms."

Children of immigrants are outperforming children whose family trees have deeper roots in the United States, learning more in school and then making smoother transitions into adulthood, according to sociologists at The Johns Hopkins University.

Researchers Lingxin Hao and Han S. Woo tracked nearly 11,000 children from as young as age 13 into their early 30s, coming from families with diverse backgrounds. When comparing children with similar socioeconomic status and school conditions, Hao and Woo found that the best students, and later the most successful young adults, were born in foreign countries and came to the United States before reaching their teens. American-born children whose parents were immigrants followed closely in terms of achievement.

Hao and Woo found that the advantages were comparable for both Asian and Hispanic children. Their study, "Distinct Trajectories in the Transition to Adulthood: Are Children of Immigrants Advantaged?" appears as part of a special section on children from immigrant families in the September/October 2012 edition of the journal Child Development.

The study affirms the ideal of the American immigrant success story at a time when immigration is often seen as a problem. Today, almost one quarter of American children are the children of immigrants, based on Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2009, so this study suggests good things for the quality and skill level of the U.S. labor force down the line, said Hao, the study's lead author.

"Our findings challenge the view that children of immigrants are lagging behind children of native-born parents in the transitioning to adulthood," said Hao, a professor of sociology in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins. "Given the same backgrounds, children of immigrants are actually more likely to follow the best trajectory leading to positive early adult outcomes."

Hao and Woo, a graduate student, followed data linked to individual children from ages 13 to 17 up to ages 25 to 32. The researchers set out to see which groups of children followed the best trajectory in terms of academic achievement, which Hao and Woo measured by the level of difficulty in the math and science courses the students completed. They also looked at school engagement, or the proportion of courses each high schooler passed in an academic year, assuming that if students were engaged in their work, they should pass every class.

To measure success when the subjects reached their 20s and 30s, Hao and Woo looked at the level of the highest academic degrees attained and general psychological well-being using a scale based on feelings of social belonging, control of life circumstances and confidence in handling personal problems.

What explains the more positive trajectory for children of immigrants? Hao suggests that there is a greater sense of community among immigrants out of necessity: Newcomers often need a lot of assistance when they first arrive in the United States. But Hao, who is from China, thinks there is also a great deal of inspiration to be found among the immigrant community. Parents, she says, might be working multiple low-level jobs and encourage their children to seek a better life for themselves. The success stories of immigrants who have "made it" are also held up as role models for immigrant children, something children of native-born parents might be lacking, Hao says. To that end, this research can inform education and labor-force policy makers when it comes to new plans to help lower socioeconomic groups move ahead, she says.

"With 24 percent of all American children from immigrant families, our findings provide fresh evidence for policymakers who are concerned with the quality of immigrant generations and the skill composition of the future labor force," Hao said. "My hope is that policymakers will look at our findings and work on ways to create similar 'protective factors' for all racial minority children, because these factors allow children from immigrant families to do well and be resilient despite their lower socioeconomic and racial-minority backgrounds."

Hao and Woo analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and the Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement study, both funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The current study was funded by an NICHD training grant to the Johns Hopkins University Population Center, founded in 1971 to stimulate and facilitate interdisciplinary population research throughout the university.

Smoke from Idaho wildfire poses health risk-officials

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - Smoke from a massive Idaho wildfire posed a health risk to a small mountain town that was the staging area for firefighters battling the blaze, health officials said on Tuesday.

Government air monitors showed pollution levels peaked in the hazardous zone Monday night as the Mustang Complex fire, north of Salmon in east-central Idaho, poured thick smoke into a community that has coped with poor air for nearly seven weeks.

"I think we all have to consider it a crisis at this point," said Jim Vannoy, program manager for environmental health education and assessment with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

The lightning-sparked blaze that has raged since late July is one of several large fires in the West.

Idaho's Mustang Complex in the Salmon-Challis National Forest grew to nearly 300,000 acres on Tuesday as firefighters braced to defend homes in two small communities. About 400 residences were ordered evacuated on Sunday.

In neighboring Washington state, 100 smaller wildfires from the Washington-Oregon line to just west of Spokane and north to the Canadian border charred 80,000 acres, threatening scores of homes, officials said.

In Idaho, relief from the smoke was not expected any time soon. The smoke contains noxious gases like carbon monoxide and fine particles that can drive deep into the lungs and aggravate or cause respiratory or heart ailments.

Public health experts said research is limited on the long-term effects of wildfire smoke because the exposure usually is concentrated in remote, sparsely populated areas.

"In general, the thoughts are that the health effects will be resolved because the events are, at most, weeks in duration," said Joel Kaufman, professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Washington.

Janet Nelson, local emergency services coordinator, said she was fielding reports of children coughing to the point of vomiting, health workers complaining of fatigue and scores of people with persistent headaches.

"I have worries for the health of the community," she said.

County emergency managers provided residents with masks on Tuesday. Nelson said her office had dispensed nearly 300 masks and school officials urged students to wear them.

"I feel like I'm a smoker - and I don't smoke," said Kellen Miller, a 26-year-old science teacher, describing nights of disrupted sleep and work days made difficult by headaches.

In Washington state, about 2,500 firefighters, helped out by 150 minimum-security prison inmates, were able to hold most fires in the state at bay. State Department of Natural Resources spokesman Bryan Flint said shifting winds due on Thursday could cause problems.

The most threatening blaze, the Canyons Fire, a mile west of Wenatchee, merged with the Twin Peaks fire on Tuesday. It burned 1,200 acres and prompted evacuation of 150 homes.

Tebow's role with Jets remains unclear after debut

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Tim Tebow ran out onto the field for the New York Jets' first offensive play of the season as a starter.

Not at quarterback, of course. That's Mark Sanchez's job. But in his Jets debut last Sunday, there was Tebow lined up on the right side of the line as a slot receiver ? officially listed as a tight end.

The crowd cheered, Tebow ran a harmless route and then headed back to the sideline. A sprinkling of Tebow and the wildcat package turned out to be more than enough in a 48-28 rout of the Bills.

"I'm definitely competitive, but the No. 1 thing to help competitiveness is winning football games," said Tebow, who was involved in only 10 of the Jets' offensive snaps. "However I can help this team to win football games, that's the ultimate goal."

That's coming from a guy who has always expressed a desire to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, and led Denver to the playoffs in that role after earning the job last season.

With the Jets, at least through the first game, he's merely a contributor who ran five times for 11 yards and didn't throw a pass. But he's a player who gives opponents fits because they have to plan for him, regardless. That includes Pittsburgh, which might see Tebow maybe as little as Buffalo did. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin knows better, though, than to brush off Tebow's presence.

"That's something that they control, from a play-calling standpoint," Tomlin said Wednesday. "I know that we better be prepared for more than what I saw him do in the game on Sunday."

After all, Tomlin and the Steelers have seen him do a lot more. Tebow knocked them out of the playoffs last season with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas in overtime in Denver last season.

"Obviously, he's a capable passer," Tomlin said. "That's an element of it that we need to be prepared for."

And that is exactly why the Jets ? particularly coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum, offensive coordinator Tony Sparano and owner Woody Johnson ? wanted Tebow on their team.

Some have said New York's trade for the quarterback in March was purely a publicity stunt. The Jets have said it makes them a better offense, one with an unpredictable presence that might be unmatched in the entire league. After all, Tebow is a 6-foot-3, 250-pound, rock-solid guy who can run it, toss it or throw a block ? as he did on a few special teams plays last week.

The element of surprise is part of the playbook, and one that can't be overlooked. Just because the Jets used him sparingly in Week 1 doesn't mean there won't be a whole lot of Tebow Time this Sunday at Pittsburgh, or next week at Miami, and so on.

"We're never going to put a number out there," Ryan said of what percentage of plays made for Tebow were used against the Bills. "We're going to leave it as is. It will always be in the game plan. We'll see how much we need to use it, how little we'll do and how much we'll do. It'll obviously depend on what we think is in our best interest.

"Will it vary from week to week? It probably will, but teams need to prepare for it."

Tebow ran only two true wildcat plays against the Bills, with Sanchez lined up at wideout. Most of his other snaps came out of the read-option, and for only the fifth time in his NFL career, he didn't throw a pass in a game in which he has played.

He even got surprisingly booed for the first time as a member of the Jets when he failed to gain anything on a second-and-6 play from the Bills 12. Some fans and media reasoned that it might have taken away from the rhythm Sanchez was in with the offense at that point, forcing Tebow into the mix unnecessarily.

"It's something that I've had to do before," Tebow said of his various roles. "My first year in Denver and my first four games last year, and also my freshman year at Florida, I had a role similar to this."

But he's also coming off a magical season in which he had comeback after comeback and was the starting quarterback for a playoff team.

"This is a new opportunity, a new team and I'm excited to be here," he said. "I'm not looking back at the past. I'm just trying to do the best I can with the present and look forward to the future."

Tebow has consistently said all the right things since coming to New York, refusing to add any fuel to the fire by saying he wants to be out there more or thinks he could do more. Sanchez, to his credit, has also been careful with what he has said when it comes to Tebow, and entered the season more focused than ever.

"I think he's handled everything well," Sanchez said of Tebow, whom he considers a friend. "He's really come in and fit in with our team. He's tried to be a team guy all the way. He understands that he's going to get opportunities to touch the football and when he does, he wants to make the most of them. ... If I were in his shoes, I don't know how I'd handle some of the stuff he goes through, but it's fun to talk about in the quarterbacks room."

Tebow is still undoubtedly the biggest personality on the team, and very possibly the most popular athlete in the entire New York sports scene. Whether his impact on the field matches all that hype, well, that's for opponents to find out.

From week to week, game by game.

"Whenever you get called on, you want to be able to go in there and be effective and efficient, and you want to help the team to try and get a victory," Tebow said. "You do that by creating first downs and hopefully being able to get in the end zone."

Experimental drug curbs smokers' nicotine cravings

LONDON (Reuters) - An experimental drug that blocks certain brain receptors can reduce nicotine cravings in addicted rats and baboons - a finding researchers say could lead to new medicines to help people stop smoking for good.

The candidate drug, called GSK598809, belongs to a class of compounds that block a specific type of dopamine receptor in key areas of the brain linked to tobacco addiction.

It is now ready for testing in early-stage clinical trials in humans, said Manolo Mugnaini, a researcher at the Aptuit Centre for Drug Discovery and Development in Verona, Italy, which was formerly owned by GlaxoSmithKline.

The drug was originally being developed by GSK, but the British drugmaker decided in 2010 to end investment in some areas of neuroscience research, and halted work on GSK598809 as part of that decision. The compound is now part of a research project using imaging scans to explore brain mechanisms behind impulsivity, stress and addiction.

Previous studies have shown that nicotine in tobacco smoke increases the release of the brain chemical dopamine in the ventral striatum, midbrain and pallidum - all parts of the brain thought to play a key role in getting smokers hooked.

The World Health Organisation says there are a billion smokers worldwide and tobacco kills up to half of its users.

CRAVINGS REDUCED

Mugnaini said the animal tests as well as some very early studies in humans suggested GSK598809 blocks dopamine receptors in the brain known as D3 receptors, and helps reduce cravings.

"This is the first time with this class of drugs that we have had signals of efficacy in humans," he told Reuters.

"And what is more important about this work is that we have provided a method that can be used to take this class of compounds from pre-clinical trials to full human trials."

He said brain imaging was key to that future development.

"From our study we have pictures of the drug going to the right expected target, the D3 subtype of dopamine receptors, in brain areas that play a key role in nicotine addiction in the brain," he said.

"By following this model based on imaging of the brain, we know we can monitor the performance of the drug in humans in an efficacious way."

Mugnaini and colleagues tested GSK598809 on rats and baboons and used data from those experiments to create a model to find an appropriate dose level for humans. They then treated smokers who agreed to go without cigarettes overnight with GSK598809 and found that it partially alleviated their nicotine cravings.

More importantly, Mugnaini said, the brain imaging studies suggested that higher doses of GSK598809 than those used in the human tests may be more effective at reducing smokers' cravings.

The study's findings were published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology on Wednesday.

Several drugs are already on the market to help smokers quit, including Pfizer's Chantix or Champix, and GSK's Zyban, an antidepressant also approved for smoking cessation.

Although there are years of testing ahead before this experimental drug may be licensed for use in patients, Mugnaini said it could one day be used alongside a drug like Chantix.

Because they have different modes of action, Chantix may be more beneficial in helping smokers take the initial step of quitting, he said, while a new drug from GSK598809's class would be designed to reduce cravings once they have stopped, limiting the risk they will relapse, a common problem for smokers.

The American Lung Association (ALA) estimates it takes the average smoker five or six serious attempts to finally quit.

GoDaddy Web outage takes out small-business sites for a time | The ...

Tech ? Service restored after several hours as cause investigated.

Thousands and possibly millions of websites hosted by GoDaddy.com went down for several hours on Monday, causing trouble for the mainly small businesses that rely on the service.

A Twitter feed that claimed to be affiliated with the "Anonymous" hacker group said it was behind the outage, but this couldn?t be confirmed. Another Twitter account, known to be associated with Anonymous, suggested the first one was just taking advantage of an outage it had nothing to do with.

GoDaddy spokeswoman Elizabeth Driscoll said the outage began shortly after 1 p.m. EDT. By around 5:50 p.m. EDT, the GoDaddy.com website and sites hosted by the company were back up and running. Driscoll had said the company was investigating the cause.

GoDaddy.com hosts more than 5 million websites, mostly for small businesses. Websites that were complaining on Twitter about outages included MixForSale.com, which sells accessories with Japanese animation themes, and YouWatch.org, a video-sharing site.

Catherine Grison, an interior designer in San Francisco who operates the site YourFrenchAccent.com, said she had to stop sending emails with her website link in them while the outage was ongoing. The site is where she displays her portfolio of work.

"If I have no visuals I have nothing left except the accent," said Grison, a native of Paris. She said she was already shopping around for another site host because she was unhappy with GoDaddy?s customer service.

Earlier, Kenneth Borg, who works in a Long Beach, Calif., screen printing business, said fresnodogprints.com and two other sites were down. Their email addresses weren?t working either.

"We run our entire business through websites and emails," Borg said.

The business even takes orders from its two physical stores through the Web, so clerks had to use their personal email addresses to send in orders to the printing shop, causing an administrative headache, Borg said.
